Adopting the name Kutsuna, they earned status as warrior retainers for their role in northern campaigns, and their patriarch, Yoshihiro Kutsuna, founded the "Kutsuna Style" of swordsmanship. Centuries later, all glory had faded, leaving only the sword arts alive. Ichiun's father, a self-defense force kendo instructor, hoped his son would inherit the legacy and was unsparing in his training.

From childhood, Ichiun was solemn and austere, dedicated to restoring his clan's name. He immersed himself in Miyamoto Musashi's "Niten Ichi-ryū," blending it with the Kutsuna Style's principles. Wielding dual blades, he forged his own philosophy: "Two Blades, One Mind." Before reaching adulthood, his mastery was profound, earning him the epithet "Sword Saint Reborn." At a national kendo tournament, he crossed blades on the platform with Misaki Shirakura, eldest daughter of the Shirakura financial conglomerate. Steel flashed in harmony; their spirits resonated. From then on, a deep mutual respect and understanding grew. They often sparred and debated the Way of the Sword, becoming rare kindred spirits.

Yet peace was fleeting. The World Integration War erupted, and the flames soon consumed Japan. Feeling his talents wasted, Ichiun resolved to follow his ancestors' path and restore his clan through military merit. Before leaving, he sent a letter to Misaki: "We part now, life or death unknown. If we meet again, may we both be well." No reply ever came. Visiting her home, he found it empty—the Shirakura family had already evacuated the warfront.

On the battlefield, Ichiun Kutsuna distinguished himself repeatedly. But during a night raid withdrawal, he held the rear alone and was gravely wounded. By the time he reached a field hospital, he was nearly crippled. Given his valor and the hospital's dire lack of resources, the medic offered two choices: undergo an experimental cybernetic procedure by the Science Progressive Front, or leave the war with his broken body. Choosing to survive and fight on, Ichiun accepted the procedure—on the condition he could still fight like a warrior.

After the surgery, his body was rebuilt: carbon-fiber bones, synthetic armor, a tactical recognition chip linked to his hippocampus, and a custom pair of titanium alloy blades. Returning to combat, he moved like a nightmare—a ghostly figure whose twin blades sheared through anything. His gaze was cold, his actions lethally efficient. He cut down countless foes, earning the moniker "Double-Edged Wraith" from his terrified enemies.

Yet, through successive battles, Ichiun gradually sensed his memories and thoughts being eroded. The chip in his brain seemed to be subtly rewriting his past. It brought splitting headaches and an unconscious, growing addiction to combat and slaughter. The feeling of being controlled, consumed, grew stronger.

Removing the chip would damage his hippocampus, meaning total amnesia. Leaving it in meant his mind would be slowly devoured until he became nothing but a killing machine. To escape this inhuman fate, Ichiun stormed the Science Progressive Front Research Lab alone. He activated a "neural reset device" to sever the chip's link to his hippocampus. The cost was nearly all his memories. For a time, he lost even the awareness of self, becoming a "beast" driven by subconscious instinct.

When consciousness finally returned, the world was already a wasteland. The "Colossal Gaze" looked out over the vast wilds, and over Ichiun, standing alone within them. His mind was a blank slate, retaining only the muscle memory of his dual blades and the fading shadow of a vague silhouette in his thoughts. In that moment, he no longer knew who he was, and embarked on a lost journey to find himself.

Years later, Ichiun drifted into a dilapidated tavern. Under dim lights, he saw a woman sitting quietly in a corner. Her bearing struck him with a jarring sense of familiarity. They held each other's gaze for a moment, wordless. Fragments of memory flashed—a rainy dojo, an undelivered letter, the smoke of battlefields. In that instant, he remembered everything. His name. And hers.

Yet, in the end, no recognition was spoken. As the tavern emptied, they simply lowered their eyes and passed by each other without a word, departing separately into the night.

Standing on a windswept ridge, the gales howled across the wastes, metal and wind weaving a low hum. Ichiun touched the twin blades at his side, as if he could still feel within them a lingering warmth of the humanity they once served.

The world had changed, and he was remade. Ichiun understood—no matter what he became, so long as he could still raise his blades by his own will, he remained a warrior. Yet even so, he could never again be the Ichiun of before.
